Techie's Tip: Protecting Your Business from Disaster
Our tech tip this month comes from our resident programmer, Mike G., who primarily works out of Nerds on Call in Normal, IL. Mike started working for Facet Family of Companies in 2008 as a part-time technician. He began working as a full time technician in 2010 and has since become our Senior Program Developer & Project Manager.
Mike cannot emphasize enough the importance of routine data backup on all personal or business device. While data backup on one’s personal devices remains necessary and extremely important, loss of data for a business of any size can be disastrous and often results in loss of money, time and resources in order to recover or recreate the data.
Human error (no one is perfect!), viruses, hard drive failure and power outages are just a few of the numerous reasons companies lose data. Unfortunately, even the most controlled and secure networks cannot escape the possibility of their data being rendered lost or unreadable. While there is no way to completely eliminate the possibility of data loss, there are safety measures you can take to ensure data is easily recoverable.
Mike has seen the effects data loss can have on a business and offered some tips to safeguard your business against it. His first tip for increasing your level of protection is routine backups. Backups should be running regularly and as routinely as possible. Any data that can interfere with day-to-day operations if lost should be included in the backup. He also noted that it is imperative to choose a reliable device, or the cloud, for storing the backed up data. Hiring a company that specializes in network backups and data recovery, such as Facet Technologies, Inc., is a great option to ensure disaster does not happen. Technology needs in the future will only grow and expand, and having the right people to implement and maintain your networks and backups is vital to protecting your company and its assets.
